Why aren't steps updating?
Get answers about how steps are tracked and scored in a Challenge.
A Step Challenge is based on the number of steps a user completes within the scoring period. The format of the score depends on calculation type in the particular setup. For example, with a goal of 5,000 steps, requiring daily consistency over a fixed seven-day period--walking six out of seven days results in a final score of 86%.

For your app to sync with the steps recorded on your device, you need to:
- Have the app installed and phone turned on.
- Enable step tracking permission in your device settings.
- Open the Challenge section in the app at the end of each day.
Steps are only recorded on days you open the Challenge section due to background app limitations. (The app updates steps every 30 seconds while open.) Your phone, however, still has them saved. So, if you miss going to the app on a given day, you can use the Rewind button to retrieve the steps from your device for each missed day.
The Rewind button allows you to manually submit your steps for past dates, ensuring all your steps are accurately recorded.
To update your steps manually:
1. Open the app and go to Challenges.
2. In the top-right corner of the Challenge, click the Rewind icon.
- This opens a calendar where you can pick past dates to catch unrecorded steps.
3. Select a date.
- A query is executed on your phone for that day and this is transmitted to the Refresh server.
There is no limit on how far back in time you can go. You'll need to update one day at a time, but you can do all of them!
Why is the scoring period important when updating steps?
If users don't consider the scoring period of the Challenge, they might misunderstand their progress or total steps. For instance, they could be confused if their steps appear lower than expected, due to a reset in a recurring weekly, daily, or monthly Challenge.
