Challenge setup fields
Who can do this:
- Anyone with editing permissions for Challenges, Homescreen (if selecting Availability), and Messages (if sending a message)
- Additional viewing permissions are needed for tied content (e.g., Forms, Media Collections)
In addition to the standard common sections, each field provides options to select the type of Challenge, set the goal, and choose how scoring is calculated.
Enter a header for your Challenge, preferably under 40 characters to ensure fit. The character limit is 200.
Select a small graphic from the dropdown, which appears to the left of the title. In the right panel, a preview shows how it will appear on the homescreen.
This field auto-fills the Goal summary based on your entries for Type, Timeframe, Period, and Calculation type. If you make changes to any of these fields, update the Description to reflect the latest summary.
To update the description:
1. Click Copy to description.
2. Delete the older version(s) of your Goal summary from the Description field.
If an image was already included in your piece of content, it is automatically attached. You can replace the image by clicking x and then Upload image.
In the dropdown, select the type:
- Content, event, or form: This is based on digital engagement within the Refresh app. Self-Reporting is also in this category, as it uses a form.
- Step tracking: This uses a third-party app to count steps.
This field appears when Content, event, or form is selected. The trigger is the content employees need to view to complete the Challenge goal.
The Trigger field is auto-filled with your selected content. You can change the existing trigger, or add one.
To add or change the trigger:
1. Select the Trigger.
2. In the content chooser, select an item or page.
Select a timeframe for the scoring period. This is when the Challenge is open and users can receive completions and collect points. A completion is when the Challenge goal is completed.
Select this to count the scores or completions for a specific period, on an ongoing basis.
Period: In the dropdown, select how often you want scoring to occur. Scores reset according to the period you select:
- Daily: Scores reset every morning.
- Weekly: Scores reset every Monday.
- Monthly: Scores reset the first of every month.
- Yearly: Scores reset the first of every year.
How do I start a recurring Challenge?
It's recommended to align the visibility of a recurring Challenge with the beginning of the scoring period, which you can do using the Hide/Show dates. For instance, in a weekly Challenge the score resets every Monday, so you could make it visible on a Monday.
Select this to recount the score or completions each day, starting from that day and looking back a specific amount of time.
- Period: In the dropdown, select the number of days, weeks, or months you want to look back.
Select this to specify a timeframe in the future, during which scores or completions are counted.
- Period: Select a start and end date and time.
Choose how scores are calculated within the Period you selected.
- At least once: Scoring is calculated at least once.
- Total: One total score is given for the period.
- Daily consistency: A daily average percentage is computed.
For example, if you select recurring, weekly, and at least once, scores will be calculated at least once every week.
The goal summary is auto-generated, based on the information you entered in the previous fields. Click Copy to description to update the Description field with the latest goal summary.
Tick the options you want:
Award points on completion: Assign a certain number of points for a completion. These are additional to any points accrued during the Challenge.
Completion text: Enter a message users receive once they complete a Challenge in a given period.
How do I give Rewards using points?
Granting points can be tied to giving Rewards, such as gift cards. Learn more at Build a Points system.
Opt-in Challenge: This requires users to click Join Challenge to start scoring. If unselected, everyone who you created the Challenge for is automatically enrolled.
Solo Challenge: This prevents users from seeing a leaderboard and each others' scores.
Optionally, set Hide/Show dates to control when the Challenge (including the leaderboard) appears. For example, announce the Challenge before it starts, or keep it visible a few days after scoring ends.
Select the Group(s) or Team(s) that you want the Challenge to be visible to:
- If no Group is selected, the Challenge can be viewed by everyone.
- If a Group or Team is selected, ensure the employees you want to reach are in that Group or Team.

If you want, select a User tag. User tags are useful when you have special project or event that you want to assign to a custom selection of employees.

To save, select one of the following:
Save and close: The Challenge is immediately published to the Challenges section of the app, unless you selected hide/show dates.
Save and send message: The Challenge is saved and the Compose page opens, where you can enter a message to send to selected recipients. See Send a message.
