Build a Points system

6min

Who can do this:

  • Anyone with editing permission for Rewards
  • Additionally, the Points permission is needed to view or adjust users' points

Before awarding points users can redeem for a Reward, consider a long-term strategy, by building your own points economy. Below are a few suggestions for approaching this.

Set a budget

What is your total money or points supply? In addition to the total funds you have available for purchasing Rewards, your budget could include:

  • The cost per Reward, in dollars and points.
  • The number of Rewards available.
  • The annual cost for each Reward.

Your budget will be determined by how you assign value to points, Rewards, and goals, which are covered in the points below.

Assign value to points

What are you points worth? Give a value to your points that fits your budget and clearly shows how point earnings are redeemed for different Rewards. Keeping it simple will allow you to more easily track your points supply. For example, 100 points = 1 dollar.

Set point costs for Rewards

What Rewards do you want to make available and what are they worth? Since your budget is an important factor, you could include Rewards that don't require direct purchases. For example, points could be redeemed to give a Rave, for paid time off, or a fitness class, depending on the amenities you have available.

Assign point values to goals

Choose the number of points employees will earn for completing different goals. Consider the questions below.

What goals will you award points for? You could award points for completing specific Challenges (completions), and/or receiving Raves (recognition).

How many points is a completion or Rave worth? You could select point values according to the level of difficulty and length of time it takes to complete the goal. Alternatively, you could assign all completions one point value, and all Raves another point value.

How quickly will points be accrued? If you award points for daily completions, points will be accrued quicker than for weekly or monthly completions.
